Davenport West High School introduces new CNA program

Davenport West High School will host a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday afternoon, for its new certified nursing assistant program.

The ceremony will also be an opportunity for students to show off their classroom and teach others about the courses offered.

Davenport School District Nurse Manager Joan Jutting said, this is the first CNA program offered to high school students in the Quad Cities.

The program is a 9 week course with 45 hours of classroom work, supplemented by 30 hours of clinical work.

Students who complete the course are eligible to receive Scott Community College credit and are eligible to take the certification exam through the college as well.

Once the certification exam is complete, students will be able to receive job opportunities in the healthcare field for high school graduates, receiving anywhere from $12 to $14 an hour.

Jutting said, this program is a great way for students to further their study at a young age, while getting hands on training and experience.

“St. Ambrose is one of the colleges that provides our health services education and they say that it is a requirement for them to have enrollment into their schools,” Jutting said.

“Three of the nurses there are excited about it, there are four students that want to be a nurse and then there is one that wants to go into pre-med out of the nine that we have. This is very necessary for them to get those basic skills and knowledge base for their health careers,” said Jutting.

Genesis Health Systems donated about $10,000  in equipment to help provide an industry standard classroom and work environment.

Tuesday’s ceremony will start at 1:45 at Davenport West High School.
