A suspect charged with the death of a one-year-old boy in Georgia was found under his mother's bed when officers arrested him, according to reports.
Jamarius Khalil Dixon, 19, was apprehended by officers after his girlfriend's baby boy Jayce Gibson was declared dead on February 24, 2021. The young toddler was rushed as an emergency to Macon's Coliseum Northside Hospital after his mother and Dixon said they had noticed Jayce had become unresponsive.
Jayce's cause of death could not be determined at the time and an autopsy at the GBI Medical Examiners Office was scheduled for March 1, according to a statement released by Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
Police were later alerted once the preliminary examination was complete and said they had been told their assessment found that Jayce "did not die of natural causes" and he had in fact suffered head trauma, prompting officers to launch a homicide investigation.
A spokesperson for the Bibb County Sheriff's Office shared a statement on Facebook on Wednesday, March 3, that outlined the details of Dixon's arrest.
The statement read: "During the course of the investigation, information was provided that led to the arrest of the boyfriend. On Wednesday, the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMSRFT) and the Washington County Sheriff's Office located the boyfriend at a family residence in Sandersville, Georgia.
"He was taken into custody and transported to Bibb County. The boyfriend, 19-year-old Jamarius Khalil Dixon, is currently being held in the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center, without bond for the charges of murder and cruelty to children in the first degree."
The Macon-based Telegraph reported Dixon was arrested at his mother's home and was found under her bed when he was apprehended, according to an official with the USMSRFT. An investigation into Jayce's death is ongoing and offers said they had no further information at the time.
It added Dixon had previously been a "standout basketball player" at Washington County High School in Sandersville.
No other arrests were made in connection to Jayce's death. As of Wednesday night, Dixon was being held at the Bibb jail. No trial date where Dixon will face his two charges has been fixed at this time.
