Thomas Bolyn Smothers III, better known as Tom Smoothers, was born on February 2, 1937, in New York City, United States of America. He was born on Governors Island in New York City at Fort Jay Army Post-Hospital.
He was the son of Ruth, also known as Nee Remick, who worked as a home hawker. His father’s name was Major Thomas B Smothers, and he was an army officer who died in World War II in April 1945.
Dick Smothers, his younger brother, and Sherry Smothers were his other siblings. They eventually moved to California. Later, Tom enrolled at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach. He used to act in plays and compose music in high school. He later completed high school.
He was also a competitive unicyclist and a parallel bars state champion gymnast. He later attended San Jose State University College, also known as San Jose State. At the university level, he also competed in both Paul vault and gymnastics for the track team.
Career of Tom Smothers
Tom and his younger brother Dick began their careers as folk musicians. They were not musically equipped at the time to make a career out of it, so they began incorporating comedy into their music sets.
He began guest-starring and recurring on TV shows from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. Smoothers Brother began airing and lasted for one year. They later launched “The Brothers Comedy Hour,” which became increasingly political throughout its run and was abruptly canceled.
Since then, he has continued to perform with his brother, both on the TV stage and in film projects. In 2008, he received a special Emmy award.

Richard Remick Smothers (born November 20, 1938) is an American actor, comedian, composer, and musician. He was half of the musical comedy team the Smothers Brothers, with his older brother Tom.
Smothers was born in New York City in 1938, the son of Ruth (née Remick), a homemaker, and Thomas B. Smothers, an Army officer who died as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in April 1945. His middle name, Remick, originates from his mother’s maiden name.
After moving to Southern California, Dick attended Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga, California, and graduated from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California, and later attended San José State University, then called San José State College. At SJSC, Smothers participated as a distance runner for the track team (coached by Lloyd (Bud) Winter).
Career of Dick Smothers
The Smothers Brothers formed in the late 1950s and appeared on numerous television shows, including two shows of their own: The Smothers Brothers Show, a sitcom from 1965 to 1966; and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, a variety show in 1967. The show was infamously banned on April 4, 1969. After filing a lawsuit, the Smothers were given $776,300.
In December 2009, Dick and Tom both guest-starred in a 21st-season episode of The Simpsons that also featured Cooper, Peyton, and Eli Manning.
The Smothers Brothers both announced their retirement from touring in May 2010. On the December 11, 2022, episode of CBS News Sunday Morning, the brothers announced that they would be going on tour in 2023. However, the tour was canceled and Tom Smothers announced in July 2023 that he was diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer. He died on December 26, 2023, at the age of 86.

In February 2010, Smothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In May, he and his brother announced their retirement from touring.
He is the father of six children: Dick Jr., Andrew, Steven, Sarah, Susan, and Remick. He currently resides in upstate New York. In September 2022, Smothers married Marie Navarolli Kropp.
